Job Announcement: Senior Programme Officer – Trade
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual to fill the position of Senior Programme Officer – Trade. This is a key role within the organization, responsible for facilitating and coordinating the development, implementation, and monitoring of policies and programmes that support regional integration and promote competitive and diversified trade within the SADC region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Policy Development and Harmonisation: Lead the development, strengthening, and harmonisation of trade strategies, policies, regulations, standards, and systems. Facilitate their implementation by Member States and ensure alignment with regional and international trade agreements.
- Research and Information Dissemination: Oversee data collection, commission research, and disseminate findings to inform policy and planning processes. Maintain a comprehensive database on trade-related issues.
- Strategic Planning and Programming: Identify key areas for intervention, develop strategic plans, and coordinate capacity-building initiatives in trade and trade-related matters.
- Programme Implementation: Facilitate the implementation of programmes and projects aimed at consolidating the SADC Free Trade Area (FTA), including the review of SADC Rules of Origin, elimination of non-tariff barriers, and implementation of tariff phase-down schedules.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including development agencies, research organizations, and other regional bodies, to support the unit’s objectives.
- Management and Leadership: Manage the unit’s staff, budget, and resources effectively. Ensure the unit’s goals and objectives are met and report progress to senior management.
Position Requirements:
- Education: A Master’s degree in Trade Law, Economics, Development Economics, Management, International Relations, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Experience: At least 10 years of experience in international trade or a related field, with a minimum of 4 years in a line management position.
- Skills: Strong communication, leadership, negotiation, and analytical skills. Proficiency in computer software relevant to the position.
- Competencies: Strategic thinking, resilience, and the ability to work under pressure. Demonstrated ability to present and win support for ideas in a multicultural environment.
